Chief Medical Officer (DVM) – Emergency & Specialty Veterinary Hospital Oakdale & St. Paul, Minnesota | Full-Time | Clinical + Executive Leadership
Are you a veterinarian who is passionate about both exceptional patient care and building an outstanding medical culture? Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota (AERC) is seeking a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to help shape the future of one of Minnesota's largest emergency and specialty veterinary hospitals.
This unique hybrid role combines executive medical leadership with active clinical practice, allowing you to continue caring for patients while influencing hospital strategy, quality standards, and the growth of a collaborative, high-performing medical team.
Based on the job description, the CMO serves as a clinically active leader who oversees medical quality, continuity of care, professional standards, and organizational culture while supporting the financial health and strategic direction of the hospital.
What You'll Do
- Practice medicine 2–3 days per week while maintaining an active clinical caseload
- Lead the development and implementation of hospital-wide medical standards and protocols along with the leadership team
- Mentor and support veterinarians through case consultation, medical record review, and constructive feedback
- Foster a positive, collaborative culture focused on excellence, accountability, and professional growth
- Partner with hospital leadership on strategic planning, operational efficiency, and service expansion
- Support recruitment, onboarding, and retention of veterinary clinicians and specialists
- Represent AERC within the veterinary community and referral network
The position includes leadership responsibilities spanning clinical quality, culture development, financial performance, and hospital administration while remaining actively engaged in patient care.
Qualifications Required
- DVM or VMD degree
- Eligible to serve as the hospital's DVM of Record
- Minnesota veterinary license and DEA registration (or ability to obtain)
- Proven leadership skills and commitment to high-quality medicine
- Excellent communication and collaboration abilities
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced emergency and specialty environment
Preferred
- Board-certified specialist
- Emergency or specialty practice experience
- Additional leadership, business, or human resources training
