About the Role - Your Responsibilities
As Chief Medical Officer, you'll serve as PetFix's senior clinical leader while continuing to perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgery.
You'll perform approximately 22-35 surgeries per day while helping establish the medical standards that guide our growing organization.
This position combines hands-on surgery with leadership, mentorship, quality assurance, and strategic medical oversight.
Clinical Excellence
Perform high-quality canine and feline spay/neuter surgeries
Conduct pre-operative examinations and post-operative evaluations
Oversee anesthesia, pain management, recovery, and patient safety
Manage medical records and surgical documentation
Respond to post-operative concerns and medical emergencies
Perform humane euthanasia when medically appropriate
Medical Leadership
Serve as the organization's senior medical authority
Develop and maintain medical, surgical, anesthesia, pain management, and infection-control protocols
Ensure compliance with DEA, Ohio TDDD, and controlled-substance regulations
Lead quality assurance and continuous improvement initiatives
Review surgical outcomes and patient safety metrics
Maintain evidence-based standards of care
Team Development
Supervise veterinarians, veterinary technicians, and assistants
Mentor and coach medical staff
Support recruiting, onboarding, and continuing education
Foster a collaborative, positive workplace culture
Conduct performance evaluations in partnership with the Executive Director
Organizational Leadership
Partner with the Executive Director to guide clinical operations
Help determine daily surgical capacity
Advise leadership on medical equipment, staffing, protocols, and strategic growth

Requirements
We're Looking for Someone Who Has...
Required Qualifications:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM)
Active Ohio veterinary license in good standing (or ability to obtain licensure before employment)
Eligible to work in the United States
Professional liability insurance
DEA registration (or ability to obtain)
Excellent surgical skills and sound clinical judgment
Strong leadership and communication skills
Experience in one or more of the following is highly desirable:
High-quality/high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN)
Shelter medicine
Community medicine
Nonprofit veterinary practice
Surgical leadership
Team supervision and mentoring
