Grand Strand Humane Society, located in sunny Myrtle Beach, is a progressive, no-kill animal shelter committed to lifesaving, compassionate care, and innovative programs that keep pets and families together. We provide comprehensive medical, behavioral, and adoption services to ensure that every animal has the best possible chance for a healthy, happy life.
We are breaking ground next month on a brand new ~34,000 sq ft shelter and clinic with an anticipated open date of Jan 2027!! Until that time, our fabulous team is still doing amazing work at our current location!!
Our Shelter Veterinarian plays a key role in maintaining the health and welfare of shelter animals through medical oversight, disease prevention, and population management, all aligned with the organization’s no-kill, lifesaving mission.
Key Responsibilities
Shelter Medicine & Animal Care
- Perform physical exams, diagnostics, treatments, and medical procedures for shelter animals.
- Develop and oversee medical protocols to ensure the health and welfare of all animals in care.
- Provide guidance on animal care, sanitation, nutrition, and housing standards.
- Collaborate with animal care and behavior teams to support the well-being of all animals.
Surgery (HQHVSN & Other Procedures)
- Perform high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries following best practice standards.
- Conduct other soft tissue surgeries and sedated procedures as needed.
- Ensure efficient, safe, and humane surgical practices and anesthesia monitoring.
- Maintain accurate surgical and medical records in the shelter’s database.
Leadership & Collaboration
- Provide training and mentorship for veterinary technicians and assistants.
- Work closely with shelter management and staff to ensure coordinated care and positive outcomes.
- Participate in development of medical policies and strategic planning for shelter programs.
